Advocacy resources

AIGA is engaged in a serious, extended campaign to raise public awareness of the value of effective information design in the public sector. The purpose of the campaign is to make information design an integral part of national legislative reform initiatives, including election reform, Social Security reform, Medicare reform, immigration reform, tax reform, the census and e-government.

The campaign is designed to take advantage of three levels of effort:

  • National level: AIGA executive director Richard Grefe has been meeting with members of Congress and their staffs, as well as with officials at agencies such as the Bureau of Labor Statistics, etc.
  • Chapter level: 28 chapters have offered to form Chapter Advocacy Teams that will generate letters to members of Congress and arrange meetings with them.
  • Individual member level: We encourage all members to become involved. An easy start is by writing a letter to your representatives.

The goals of the campaign are to:

  • Raise political awareness of the value of effective information design
  • Improve the quality of federal, state and local governmental design as a means to improve democracy and to set an example for the public and the private sectors
  • Increase an understanding of the role of the professional designer

AIGA submitted a statement for the record of the proceedings of the Senate Rules and Administration committee in the consideration of Senate bill 565, Senator Dodd's legislative initiative on electoral reform. With the support of advocacy teams around the country, we hope that there will be support for our position to be added to the legislation when it is taken up on the Senate floor in the coming months.
